Why I chose to be a bookkeeper

Why I chose to be a bookkeeper

Numbers were something that always came naturally to me from an early age. I just enjoyed maths and problem solving.

After being diagnosed with M.E in my teens and attempting a full time role, I accepted a part time role as a receptionist in a wellness clinic, as I just found it so hard to cope with a full time role due to my health. It’s here where I met a lovely accountant whose guidance I was under to help with the bookkeeping. They spotted my keen eye for attention to detail and accuracy and noticed how I really enjoyed doing the books so suggested that I take my exams. After 9 months of hard work and dedication, I passed all my bookkeeping exams.

Bookkeeping was something I was passionate about. I knew that with careful planning I could run my own bookkeeping practice that would give me flexibility around my M.E. I was also eager to help other business owners to get the best out of their finances. There’s so much more to bookkeeping than just number crunching. I’m on a journey with other business owners who want to smash their financial goals and it’s so rewarding seeing their business grow.

You may have heard about my love of software and automation. I love researching new software available in order to make my job easier. I use the knowledge and experience I develop with the software to introduce it to my clients in order for them to become more productive and efficient. So, it’s not just the bookkeeping which is streamlined for each of my clients. I go above and beyond to ensure all their processes are as smooth as possible to free up time for them to concentrate on growing their businesses.

If you’re considering becoming a bookkeeper because you love numbers, then you’ve also got to have the compassion and strength to help businesses, especially when they find themselves in tricky situations such as the covid pandemic. I’m very proud that all of my clients came out of the pandemic on the other side and all had access to funding they were eligible for.

It’s times like these when you realise what good bookkeeping can do for your business and it’s very rewarding.

As a bookkeeping practice, we understand how critical it is to get your pricing structure right. At LJM Bookkeeping, we’ve moved away from the traditional hourly rate model, and while this shift can feel daunting, it brings immense benefits for both our clients and us.
