How to keep your eyes healthy at a computer screen

Technology controls our lives! Whether you’re spending all day at your computer screen, or scrolling through social media on your phone or iPad, there’s no getting away from it! But how can you make sure that your eyes stay healthy whilst using these devices on a regular basis?

Get regular eye tests

It’s important when using a computer on a frequent basis that you have a routine eye exam at least on an annual basis. By doing this you will be making sure your eyes are as healthy as possible, and if your eyesight is deteriorating your optician can do something about it before it’s too late. During your visit to the opticians make sure to tell them how often you use a computer. They will ask you how close you sit to your screen.

If you already wear glasses it’s worth paying a little extra for Anti Reflective coating as this will reduce glare.

Lighting

Make sure the lighting in the room where you are using your computer is just right. Try and position your computer away from windows where you will get glare from the sun. The lighting should not be too bright in order to minimise glare.

Computer Screen

The best computer screen to have is a flat panel LED screen with an anti reflective surface. The older your screen the more likely you’re to get flickering images and it can be hard for you eyes to adjust causing eye strain. Even if you’re not consciously noticing the flickering, it can still have an impact on your eyes. The larger the screen the better so you don’t find yourself squinting or getting too close to the screen.

Adjust your settings

Make sure that your screen brightness, contrast and text size is suitable for you. If they are not quite right you will notice a difference. Have a play around and see what works best for you.

Take breaks

Not only is it important to take breaks away from your screen for the sake of your eyes, it’s also good for your concentration, motivation and wellbeing. Sitting in the same position all day can affect your posture, so get up and move around, even if it’s only for a short while.

Make a conscious effort to blink!

Blinking is something we don’t think about until someone points it out to us. Blinking is important for good eye help. It ensures that your eyes are moist and prevents dryness which can lead to sore eyes.

Also make sure that you are not constantly staring at your screen, look away from your screen at least every 20 minutes. Simply glancing at another object in the room, letting your eyes rest from focusing on the same thing will make a big difference to getting tired eyes.

Symptoms to look out for

  • Eye discomfort
  • Eye fatigue
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Eye twitches
  • Sore and red eyes

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then consult your optician as soon as possible. If you wear glasses whilst using your computer screen the cost of the eye test is an allowable expense.

Don’t let the evolution of technology ruin your health!
