We’re in a new year and that can only mean one thing. We’re all thinking about our goals and how great 2024 is going to be. However, we all know that many of us make resolutions and they’re out the window by the 3rd week of January. Goal setting is different from making a resolution. When you set goals for your business they must be detailed and specific so that you can picture them in your mind. Having a vision board is really useful to inspire and motivate you.
Setting out your goals alone can be daunting, especially if you don’t have positive support around you, that’s why having a business mentor can be really beneficial.
How can a business mentor help me?
Understand your ambitions
In order to set your goals it’s essential to fully understand what your ambitions are. You may have an idea of what you want to achieve but a mentor can help you to explore your options enabling you to dig deep into your aspirations, understanding what your full potential could be.
By using the SMART method when setting your goals, they will be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound. This clarifies in detail what your goals are, how you know you’ve achieved them and when you want to achieve them by.
Map out your journey
Your goals are much more achievable if your action points are mapped out. Larger goals need to be broken down into smaller goals to make them easier to achieve. This can be overwhelming to do alone so having a mentor by your side gives you the support and guidance needed. It also gives you another perspective on what your journey could look like.
Objective feedback
By discussing your goals with your mentor you can establish if you’re setting your sights too high, if your goals are unrealistic or maybe just need a little more time. Having another opinion is valuable when goal setting because you may end up putting unnecessary pressure on yourself which will only deflate your attitude. Positivity is critical when taking on new goals, your mentor will get you in the right frame of mind.
You can discuss your challenges with your mentor. If things are getting in your way, then you can be encouraged to think strategically about your options rather than just putting things off. It’s crucial to hit your roadblocks head on and face your obstacles in order to achieve your end goal.
Experience
A mentor has been there, done that and has got the t-shirt to prove it! The whole point of a mentor is so that they can guide you in the right direction, learning from their own personal experiences. Their failures mean they can teach you how to not make the same mistakes. Their success gives you the belief that you can do the same and anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
Contacts
A mentor may have contacts they can put you in touch with to find the right tools and resources you will require on your journey. This means you don’t have to do as much research. They can recommend books, courses, networking events etc which will enhance your progress.
Accountability
A mentor can hold you accountable for your goals. Having someone to report your progress to give you that motivation to strive to do your best. You can discuss your progression with your mentor and celebrate your milestones together. Your mentor will help you to stay focused.
It’s essential to do your research when looking for a business mentor. They’ve got to be the right fit for you, so you make a personal connection with them. You’re going to need to lean on them quite a bit at first, developing your relationship gradually as you get to learn about one another.
